Painted in the hot, still summer afternoons and completed early autumn, it seemed that the way in which trees stood together and related to each other visually was a kind of talking. I paid great attention to surface, preserving paint movement that dried in the sun. This surface somehow reflected the trees themselves; their earthiness, mutability and permanence. The orange colour was applied intuitively as the gold tinges of autumn began to appear.

The painting is supplied in a beautifully handpainted double frame with gold leaf, created by local Yorkshire craftsmen and women.
