Commissioned Painting of Painsthorpe
Commissioned Painting of Painsthorpe.jpg

Just finished a commission of Painsthorpe in the Yorkshire Wolds and am really pleased with it, as thankfully is its new owner. I really enjoyed conveying the special soft light colours you find in the Wolds; the chalky whiteness and the special quality of the light. The Wolds are so spacious and gentle.

Painting course Huttons Ambo
Painting course Huttons Ambo.jpg

Just had two fantastic days teaching in Huttons Ambo. Looking at the outstanding landscape around the village we began the day exploring plein air. It was very windy so it was not all 'plein sailing..'.

I managed to lock one person in the village hall at lunch time. She had to escape through the emergency exit and ask directions to find us. (I am very sorry Mandi!) From now on I will do a head count. Despite gale force winds, lots of exciting and original work was produced. In the afternoon we explored mark making, printing, washes, using acrylic mediums and scratching out. The Urban sketchers came all the way from Newcastle . Others came from as far afield as Stratford on Avon and Shropshire.

Here are some of the lovely quotes that I received afterwards:

"What a wonderful day on Wednesday! Thanks so much Lesley. I realised in the evening I felt happier and more relaxed than I had been all year! The sunshine and the landscape and the gorgeous food helped. But above all working alongside other artists with a sensitive tutor instead of doing my time in solitary, - trying something new. Those first little sketches gave me more pleasure than anything I had laboured over. I will get out more and be braver working in the open."

"Thank you Lesley for a really enjoyable workshop. We were all made to feel so welcome and quickly put at ease when we arrived. The village hall that we met in was a lovely, light, bright venue for the workshop and also had a ramp for ease of access."

"I find Lesley's work inspirational and it was great to watch Lesley in action and how she actually approached her work and executed it. Lesley gave really helpful feedback throughout the day that I'm going to put into action and take forward into my future work. It was a great day with really friendly people that I'd love to repeat."

Artist in Residence Burton Agnes Hall
Artist in Residence Burton Agnes Hall.jpg

Really looking forward to being Artist in Residence at Burton Agnes Hall from 21st April. I will be able to immerse myself in the beautiful gardens and house just as Spring is well under way.

Last year when I visited this glorious and charismatic place I was inspired to produce several paintings of the gatehouse which all quickly found new homes. It will be interesting, a year later, to spend some extended time there and see what inspiration I find.

I am looking forward to the opportunity to concentrate totally on painting and being creative without any outside distractions. This will be my first experience, after twenty five years of being a professional artist, of finding this unique time. I am so excited about it and am sure some special work will be produced.

Please visit me in my shared studio in the summer house. Cards and prints of past paintings of Burton Agnes Hall will be available as well copies of my first book Coming Home - a mid career retrospective of my paintings.

Fantastic workshop at St Martins School in Gilling last night. What a talented group of girls. We worked with colour, collage and negative shapes to create the floral series pictured.

Special thanks to art teacher Laura Waley for organising this event.
