Begun in Lockdown just as England was bursting into Spring, Earth Song was painted plein air in the hot May weather. I carried all my paints, water and brushes and the painting itself over the fields from my house four times in the hot Spring sun. The scene looked different every time I went there as more trees came into leaf and the Bluebells and Rhododendron came out. Clearings in woods often have a magical quality about them and I wanted to paint this one immediately. The enclosed space which opened onto a big distant view; the river Derwent below and the ploughed fields beyond. When we had a big hot fiery full moon I had to walk to the woods to see how it affected the scene. The painting contains all the elements of Earth, Water, Air and Fire and it seems fitting to call it Earth Song.
